Whole-home vs essential-loads backup

Should I back up my whole home or just essential circuits?

Essential-loads backup covers a chosen set of circuits and is dramatically cheaper, because it lowers the output requirement rather than just the runtime. Whole-home backup keeps everything live, including air conditioning, and generally requires multiple battery units. For most Florida homes the sensible middle is essential loads plus one cooling zone.

What the choice really controls

People assume backup scope controls how long the battery lasts. It controls something more fundamental: how much power the system must be able to deliver at any instant. Narrowing the scope reduces the output requirement, and output is what determines how many units you need.

This is why essential-loads backup is so much cheaper. It is not a smaller version of the same purchase, it is a different sized machine.

How each is wired

Essential-loads backup
Selected circuits are moved to a dedicated backup subpanel fed by the battery. Everything else goes dark during an outage. The electrical work of relocating circuits is a real part of the cost and the disruption.
Whole-home backup
The entire main panel is backed up through a gateway. Nothing needs relocating and the outage is close to invisible, but the system must be able to serve every load that might switch on.
Managed whole-home backup
The whole panel is backed up, but load-control devices shed large loads automatically when the battery cannot serve them. This gets closer to whole-home behaviour without whole-home output, at the cost of extra hardware and configuration.

The Florida-specific question

In most of the country this decision is about convenience. In Florida in August, whether cooling is on the backup list can be a health question, particularly for older residents or anyone with a medical condition affected by heat.

That does not automatically mean whole-home backup. Backing up a single mini-split serving one room, so there is somewhere cool to sleep, achieves most of the benefit at a fraction of the output requirement. Many homeowners find this the best value decision in the whole project.

Common questions

Can I start with essential loads and expand later?

Sometimes, and it depends heavily on the product and the panel layout. Ask the question during design rather than after, and get the answer in writing.

What usually goes on the essential-loads panel?

Refrigeration, internet equipment, a few lighting circuits, outlets in one or two rooms, any medical equipment, and a well pump if you have one. Cooling is the item that varies most between households.

Does whole-home backup mean I can use everything normally?

Only within the system’s output limit. Whole-home backup without load management can still trip if enough large loads start together, which is why managed backup exists.
