How many home batteries do I need?
How many home batteries do I need?
Size from the loads you want to keep running and for how long, not from the size of your house. Work out the continuous power those loads draw together, which sets the number of units you need for output, then work out the energy they consume over your target runtime, which sets the capacity. Whichever number is larger decides the answer.
- Step 1
- List the loads you actually want on backup
- Step 2
- Add their simultaneous draw → output requirement (kW)
- Step 3
- Multiply by target hours → capacity requirement (kWh)
Start from the loads, not the house
Square footage is a poor predictor of backup needs. A large, well-insulated house with a modern heat pump and gas cooking can be easier to back up than a smaller house with old air conditioning, an electric range and a pool pump.
The useful exercise is to write down what you genuinely want running during an outage, then be honest about what you are willing to let go. Most homeowners find that the list splits cleanly into things that matter for safety and things that matter for comfort.
| Tier | Typical contents | Effect on sizing |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Refrigeration, internet and phone charging, some lighting, medical equipment, well pump if you have one | Modest output and capacity. Achievable with a single small unit for many homes. |
| Comfort | Ceiling fans, television, some outlets, a single-zone mini-split | Adds capacity more than output. Usually the sweet spot for cost against benefit. |
| Whole home | Central air conditioning, electric range, electric water heater, pool equipment | Drives output requirements sharply upward, and usually means multiple units. |
The arithmetic
How this is calculated
Helio41 backup sizing, version 0.1
- Assumptions
- Loads are assumed to run at their stated average draw rather than their nameplate rating.
- Motor starting surges are handled by the battery’s peak rating, not its continuous rating.
- Usable capacity is used, not nominal capacity.
- No solar recharge is assumed. Any daytime generation extends runtime beyond the figure.
- Inputs come from
- Tesla, Enphase Energy
- Limitation
- This sizes a conversation, not an installation. A licensed electrician performing a load calculation on your panel is what determines the final design.
- Add up the running watts of everything you want on at once. That total, in kilowatts, is your output requirement.
- Compare it against the battery’s continuous output rating. If your total exceeds it, you need more units or fewer loads — extra capacity will not help.
- Multiply your average draw by the hours of runtime you want. That is your capacity requirement in kilowatt-hours.
- Divide by the usable capacity of one unit and round up.
- Take the larger of the output-driven count and the capacity-driven count.
Common questions
Is one battery ever enough?
For an essential-loads set — refrigeration, connectivity, lighting, fans — a single unit is often genuinely enough, and is the most common sensible starting point. It stops being enough the moment central air conditioning is on the list.
Should I oversize now or expand later?
It depends on the product. Some batteries are designed to be stacked in small increments cheaply, which favours starting small. Others make retrofitting awkward and expensive, which favours sizing correctly up front. Ask about the expansion path before you commit to the first unit.
What about running a whole house for several days?
Multi-day whole-home backup from batteries alone requires a large and expensive installation. If that is genuinely the requirement, the honest comparison is against a generator, or a battery paired with solar so the array refills the battery each day.
