Home battery storage in Sarasota, Florida

What does home battery storage do for a Sarasota home?

A home battery keeps chosen circuits running when the grid goes down — which solar alone cannot do, because a grid-tied system shuts off in an outage. What decides whether it will run your air conditioning is continuous output in kilowatts, not stored capacity. In Sarasota, that is usually the question that matters most, because cooling is the largest load in a Florida home.

The two numbers that decide everything

Capacity, in kilowatt-hours, sets how long you can run. Continuous output, in kilowatts, sets what you can switch on at all. A battery with plenty of stored energy and modest output will keep a refrigerator cold all night and still refuse to start a central air conditioner.

Your utility: Florida Power & Light

As an investor-owned utility, FPL offers net metering under Florida PSC Rule 25-6.065. A customer-owned renewable system must be sized so that it is not expected to produce more than 115% of the home’s annual consumption, and the rule also limits generating capacity relative to the service capacity. Exported energy is tracked as a kWh credit that offsets later consumption, with any remaining credit settled annually at the utility’s avoided-cost rate rather than the retail rate.

Common questions

Will a battery run air conditioning in Sarasota?

It depends entirely on the continuous output rating and on your specific unit’s draw and starting surge. Some single batteries are rated to handle central air conditioning; smaller units are not, and extra capacity does not compensate. A load calculation on your equipment is what settles it.

Do I need solar as well?

Not to have backup. But without generation the battery cannot refill, so its runtime is fixed. In a multi-day outage after a storm — the scenario most people are buying for — that difference is the whole argument for pairing storage with solar.

Does storage qualify for Florida’s tax exemptions?

Storage installed as part of a solar energy system is generally treated as a component of it for the sales tax exemption. Storage bought entirely separately can be treated differently, so ask your installer how it applies to your quote.
