A battery without solar
Can I install a home battery without solar panels?
Yes. A battery on its own charges from the grid and provides backup during outages, without any roof work. What it cannot do is refill itself once the outage runs long, so its runtime is fixed by capacity. It also does little for your bill in Florida, where there is generally no large price difference between times of day for a residential customer to arbitrage.
- What it provides
- Backup during outages, without roof work
- Key limitation
- No recharge during a long outage
- Bill impact
- Limited without a time-varying rate
When storage alone is the right call
- Your roof is not suitable for solar — heavy shading, unusual orientation, or a roof due for replacement.
- You rent the roof or live under an association that constrains what can be installed on it.
- Resilience is the actual goal and bill reduction is not, so the solar half of the project is not what you want.
- You plan to add solar later and want backup in place before the next hurricane season.
The limitation that matters
A battery is a bucket. Without generation, when it is empty the outage continues without you. For a short outage this is fine. For a multi-day outage after a major storm, it is exactly the scenario you bought the battery for, and it is the scenario in which storage alone runs out.
This is the single strongest argument for pairing storage with solar in Florida: not the bill, but the ability to refill each day when the grid is out for a week.
Why the bill case is weak here
In markets with steep time-of-use pricing, a battery earns money by charging when power is cheap and discharging when it is expensive. That opportunity depends on a large spread between rate periods. Florida residential customers do not generally face the kind of spread that makes this worthwhile, so buying storage primarily to arbitrage rates is unlikely to pay in this market. Check your own utility’s current residential rate options before assuming either way.
Common questions
Can the battery charge from the grid before a storm?
Most systems can be set to charge fully ahead of forecast severe weather, and some do it automatically from storm alerts. Confirm the specific product supports it, and know how to trigger it manually.
Is a battery cheaper than a generator?
It depends on scope. For essential loads, a battery is often comparable once installation and fuel logistics are counted. For whole-home backup over several days, a generator is usually cheaper to buy, and noisier and more demanding to live with.
Does storage alone qualify for Florida’s exemptions?
Storage installed as part of a solar energy system is generally treated as a component of it. Storage bought entirely separately may be treated differently. Ask your installer how the exemption applies to your specific quote.
