Do I pay sales tax on solar in Florida?
Is there sales tax on solar equipment in Florida?
No. Florida Statutes §212.08(7)(hh) exempts solar energy systems and their components from Florida sales and use tax. You will not see it as a rebate or a refund: it appears as sales tax simply not being charged on the equipment portion of your installation, so the saving is already inside the price you are quoted.

Why you may never notice it
Because the exemption operates at the point of sale, a homeowner comparing two quotes sees no line item for it. This occasionally leads people to believe Florida offers nothing. The exemption is real, and it is worth a meaningful amount on a full system — it is simply invisible by design.
One consequence worth knowing: because the benefit is embedded in the price, it does not depend on your tax liability. Unlike a tax credit, you do not need to owe anything to receive it.
What it covers
The exemption applies to solar energy systems and components. Labour, and any work not forming part of the solar energy system — a roof replacement carried out at the same time, for example — is treated separately. If a quote bundles roofing and solar, ask for the split.
Common questions
Does the exemption cover batteries?
Storage installed as part of a solar energy system is generally treated as a component of that system. Storage bought entirely separately can be treated differently, so ask your installer how your quote applies it.
Do I need to file anything?
No. The exemption is applied by the seller at the point of sale rather than claimed by the homeowner afterwards.
Is this the same as the federal tax credit?
No, and the distinction matters in 2026. The Florida sales tax exemption remains in force. The federal residential clean energy credit ended for systems placed in service after 31 December 2025.
